Hyperpigmentation in eczema refers to the darkening of the skin caused by inflammation or irritation. When eczema flares up, it triggers melanocytes, the cells responsible for skin color, to produce excess melanin, resulting in patches of darker skin. These areas may appear brown, gray, or even black, contrasting with the surrounding skin tone. Factors like scratching, rubbing, and prolonged inflammation exacerbate hyperpigmentation. Treatment often focuses on managing eczema symptoms to reduce inflammation and prevent further darkening. Options include topical corticosteroids, moisturizers, and gentle skincare routines. Dermatological interventions such as laser therapy or chemical peels may also help lighten hyperpigmented areas.
