This agreement requires monogamy, mutual respect, and commitment from both the husband and the wife. Based on Islamic teachings, this agreement should last for a lifetime. 2. Conditions for Marriage Islamic marriage requires that both parties consent voluntarily and speak their intention out loud during the nikah (or marriage ceremony). The ceremony must also be conducted with two adult witnesses and performed in front of family members or close friends who can act as mediators if needed. Both bride and groom are expected to bring one male witness each, but if either party is unable to do so, then the khutbah (wedding sermon) alone can be used as evidence of their consent to the terms of marriage.
