Not all lavender is created for sedation. A review of peer-reviewed aromatherapy research indicates that high-altitude Lavandula angustifolia (specifically Bulgaria or France origins) contains the highest concentrations of linalool and linalyl acetate—the esters responsible for lowering heart rate and anxiety. Avoid "Lavandin" (L. intermedia), which has higher camphor (a respiratory stimulant). For sleep architecture (increasing slow-wave sleep), look for GC/MS tested oils with 35-45% linalool.
